Tortola Charm: What to Do in the Area

Updated: Sep 17

More than 50 islands comprise the sprawling British Virgin Islands (BVI), which stretches from the Caribbean Sea to the North Atlantic. The main islands are in the Caribbean and are an ideal destination for that Caribbean escape you've longed for. Home of the BVI capital, Tortola is an island gem with its serene coves, inviting white sand beaches, and lush mountain landscapes.

The other main islands in the BVI include Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, and Virgin Gorda, along with lesser-known islands like Cooper Island, Norman Island, and Peter Island, all of which are within island-hopping distance of Tortola.

Catamarans are the sailboat of choice in these relatively shallow waters and at Top Tier Sailing School, our American Sailing Association (ASA) certified sailing course will soon have you ready to take the helm and explore all of the amazing things to see and do in the British Virgin Islands.

8 Things to Do on the Charming Island of Tortola

  1. Relax and experience the joys of island time on one of the many gorgeous white sand beaches — enjoying the beach is one of the best things to do in Tortola. From quiet, secluded coves to well-known and popular Cane Garden Bay Beach, a beach suits every desire in this tropical paradise.

  2. Snorkeling around the Baths on Virgin Gorda is hard to beat on a calm day. The surreal rocky landscape and turquoise waters will create a memorable experience.

  3. Explore the laid-back lifestyle and historic charm of Road Town, the capital of the far-flung BVI. You'll want your camera along to catch this quaint capital's bright pastel colors and historic charm.

  4. Visit a beach bar — or three! Some of the best beach bars in the world are located on these islands, and the most popular drink is the Painkiller. It's a concoction of pineapple juice and coconut cream with a heavy dose of rum.

  5. Stretch your legs during a hike in Sage Mountain National Park, a first for the BVI. There are 12 trails to choose from in this National Park, most of which are loops that allow you to make the most of the lush rainforest and stunning views. The spectacular vistas include panoramic views of the neighboring islands, especially from  1,716' tall Sage Mountain itself.

  6. Once you've tasted seafood soup and roti, you'll probably want to recreate those island flavors at home. Sunny Caribbee Spice Shop & Art Gallery has a wonderful selection of the spices and sauces you'll need to bring the iconic flavors of the West Indies home.

  7. For more than 400 years, the Callwood Rum Distillery has been hand-crafting exquisite rums. Enjoy a distillery tour and a tasting of their small-batch white, gold, dark, and spiced rums. As a bonus, their onsite shop has bottles of your favorites ready for the trip home.

  8. Learn to sail or just enjoy a private charter around the islands with Top Tier Sailing. From expertly taught sailing lessons to quiet private charters, we offer a menu of options sure to suit any taste.
